Provo, UT · Slate Canyon — Provo Foothills

Slate Canyon

18 holes · Est. 2015

The Story

Slate Canyon was established in 2015 on the mountainside above Provo, offering a disc golf experience unlike anything else in Utah County. The course is built directly into the rocky, sandy terrain of the foothills, with significant elevation changes between holes that make it as much a hiking workout as a disc golf round.

The layout takes advantage of the natural topography — steep uphill climbs reward players with dramatic downhill throws, and the mountain setting provides panoramic views of Utah Valley. The course has earned a loyal following among players who appreciate the physical challenge and mountain aesthetic, with reviewers describing it as the most uniquely "Utah vibe" course in the state.

At roughly 5,000 feet elevation, Slate Canyon offers the dynamic topography of ski-resort-style mountain courses without the altitude. Wind, loose terrain, and blind shots add to the challenge. The course is best played in cooler weather — spring, fall, and winter — as summer heat on the exposed mountainside can be intense.

What Players Say

Lots of hiking. Plenty of variety. You get the dynamic topography and top-of-the-world shots like you do at a ski resort course, but at ~5,000ft instead of 9,000ft — great for stamina. My friend was saying this is the most uniquely "Utah vibe" course, and I think I agree.

bobarik★★★★

Such a fun course, just be prepared for the hike.

pacatak★★★★★

Great course. Not for beginners. Even seasoned players may lose discs. But the challenge from the elevation is hard to find elsewhere in Utah. I love this course.

barbeauw★★★

If you want to mix in a hike with some disc golf then this is your course! A lot of different shot shapes and lines. Has a couple of cool down the mountain shots and a couple of fun island-type holes on the back nine.

Beautiful views. Super rocky, sandy. Elevation change and wind are the game here. A bad throw can lead in to a half mile hike to the bottom of the mountain and back. Huge leg workout and patience testing. Super fun course, be prepared!

Maintenance

Slate Canyon is maintained through community volunteer efforts. The course's rugged mountain terrain presents ongoing challenges: erosion reshapes pathways after storms, vegetation overgrowth can obscure fairways and hide discs, and the steep gravel paths require periodic attention. Reviewers have noted that signage improvements would help navigation, and some holes can become overgrown between maintenance cycles. The natural setting means the course is always somewhat wild — part of its character and challenge.
